BIS CERTIFICATION FOR STEELS FOR DIE BLOCKS
IS 5518:1996

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let’s take a closer look at IS 5518:1996.

IS 5518:1996 covers steels for die blocks for drop forging. This standard specifies the requirements for steels for die blocks in square, rectangular, and circular sections for drop forging.

Unless otherwise specified in the order, the processes used to manufacture the steel and the products are at the discretion of the manufacturer. The purchaser may be informed of the steel manufacturing process if so desired.

The material must be conditioned appropriately during the manufacturing process to remove any surface impressions that could lead to defects in the finished products. The material must be free of internal flaws such as pipe and flakes, and it must be free from harmful surface defects such as seams, laps, and cracks that extend beyond the machining tolerance.

The general requirements for material supply shall comply with IS 8910: 1978. Depending on the order, the steel shall be supplied in annealed or hardened and tempered condition. When tested, annealed steels must have the Brinell hardness as specified in the standard.

TESTS

The following test shall be done in accordance with the method specified.

  • Chemical composition
  • Ladle analysis
  • Hardness
  • Dimensional tolerances
  • Ultrasonic test
  • Additional test

Labelling and Marking:

Each bar larger than 50 mm in diameter or equivalent cross-section and each die block must be suitably marked with the manufacturer's name or trade-mark, as well as the cast number or any other identification mark that allows the cast number and grade to be traced.

The Standard Mark (ISI Mark) shall be marked on each bar, bundle of bars, or test certificate. The marking shall be done in accordance with the provisions of the Indian Standard, provided that the product thus marked conforms to all of the specification’s requirements. The manufacturer must obtain a BIS licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS issues a license based on a successful evaluation of the manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and manufacturing process.
