BIS CERTIFICATION FOR MOULD STEELS
IS 4430:1979

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let’s take a closer look at IS 4430:1979 for Mould Steel.

IS 4430:1979 covers mould steels in wrought condition. These are commonly used for plastic moulds and diecasting of low melting non-ferrous alloys.

The steel shall be produced using an electric or other approved process agreed upon by the purchaser and the manufacturer. Each ingot must have sufficient reduction and discards to ensure that it is free of piping, segregation, and other harmful defects.

The finished material must be free from all internal and surface defects, such as cracks, seams, flakes, pipe and segregation. Dimensional tolerances must be in accordance with the standard. The finished product must be subjected to check analysis. 1387:1967 specifies the general requirements for material supply. The material must be tested to ensure that it complies with the requirements of the standards.

TESTS

The following tests shall be carried out in accordance with the method prescribed.

  • Chemical composition
  • Brinell hardness test
  • Ultrasonic testing
  • Non-metallic inclusion content
  • Additional tests

Marking:

All products with a diameter greater than 50 mm or equivalent cross-sectional area must be stamped or painted with the manufacturer's name or trade mark, grade, and cast number at the extreme end. In addition, the material may be marked with a standard mark (ISI mark).

The manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS issues a license based on a successful evaluation of the manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and manufacturing process.
