BIS CERTIFICATION FOR ROOM AIR CONDITIONERS
IS 1391 (PART 2): 2018

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.

Let's take a closer look at IS 1391 (Part 2): 2018 for room air conditioners - split air conditioners.

IS 1391(Part 2):2018 covers split air conditioners. This standard specifies the constructional and performance specifications for split air conditioners. This standard also specifies the test circumstances and test procedures for various performance parameters of split air conditioners that run frost-free when cooling and dehumidifying at standard rating conditions. This standard specifies split air conditioners that can also function as heaters through the use of a heat pump or an electric heater.

It comprises two parts: an inside unit and an outdoor unit. The indoor unit can be installed on the floor, wall, or ceiling. The compressor, heat exchangers, fan motors, and air handling system are arranged in two separate cabinets in the Indoor and Outdoor units. It is primarily intended to supply conditioned air to an enclosed space, room, or zone (conditioned space). It has a primary source of refrigeration for cooling and dehumidification and mechanisms for air movement and filtering. The manufacturer must ensure that the product meets the standard's general, construction, and performance requirements.

Split air conditioners are classified as follows based on their function and nominal cooling capacity.

  1. Classification by Function
    • Cooling and Dehumidification
    • Cooling and Heating by Heat Pump
    • Cooling and Heating by Electric Heater
  2. Unit Type
    • Single Split having Single Indoor and Outdoor Unit
    • Multi Split having Multiple Indoor and Single Outdoor Unit
  3. Unit Mounting Arrangement
    • Floor Type
    • Ceiling Type
    • Wall Type
  4. The nominal cooling capacity of split air conditioners should be classified as follows: 3000, 4500, 6000, 7500, and 9000 kcal/h.

The air conditioner and its components must be built with enough strength and rigidity to withstand regular handling, transit, and operation conditions. There must be no sharp edges or comers that could cause injury under normal usage conditions and all moving elements that could cause an accident must be effectively guarded. Materials used in the construction of cabinets, front panels, and so on must comply with the corresponding Indian Standards wherever applicable unless modified by this standard. The manufacturer must guarantee the soundness of construction and the air conditioner's performance.

tests

The following tests shall be carried out for split air conditioners.

  • General Running Test
  • Pressure test or Leakage test
  • High Voltage Test
  • Leakage Current Test
  • Earth Resistance test
  • Cooling Capacity test
  • Power factor test
  • Maximum Operating Condition test
  • Freeze up test
  • Enclosure sweat test
  • Power consumption test
  • Maximum Heating Performance Test

Labelling and marking shall be done in accordance with IS 1391 (Part 2): 2018. Conforming to the requirements of IS 1391( Part 2):2018, the product may be certified under the terms of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 and the Rules and Regulations formulated thereunder, and the product may be marked with the Standard Mark (ISI Mark). The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The BIS grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control, testing capabilities, and production process.
