IS 15750:2006

Household frost-free refrigerating appliances refrigerators cooled by internal forced air circulation are covered under IS 15750:2006. The BIS adopted this Indian Standard after the Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Sectional Committee's final draft was approved by the Mechanical Engineering Division Council.

This standard specifies the essential characteristics of household refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers cooled by frost-free systems and the test methods for determining these characteristics. This standard does not apply to household refrigerators and freezers that do not use internal forced air circulation to cool them.

Appliances with a single refrigerating system and compartments cooled by forced air circulation and others by natural convection must be tested as per this standard. Special compartments for storing highly perishable foodstuffs and ice tray compartments may also be included in appliances covered by this standard.

Appliances must be built so that they provide adequate performance and durability in use. A series of relevant tests are used to evaluate their performance in use.

Required Tests

The following test shall be carried to verify the performance of refrigerating appliances:

1. Overall dimensions test
2. Air tightness test of door or lid
3. Opening force test of door or lid
4. Durability test
5. Mechanical strength test
6. Water vapour condensation test
7. Storage temperature test
8. Energy-consumption test
9. Temperature rise test
10. No-load pulls down test
11. Ice-making test, if applicable
12. Test for Absence of odour and taste
13. High voltage test
14. Insulation resistance test

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ECOMARK

The refrigerator shall conform to the quality, safety, and performance requirements prescribed in this standard for ECO Mark.

When applying for an ECO Mark, the manufacturer must provide BIS with the consent clearance required by the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974; 1977, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, as well as the authorization required by the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. For ECO-Mark, the refrigerator must meet the noise levels as specified in the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986 from time to time.

Each appliance must have one or more fastened rating plates with the information specified in the standard. In addition to the marking on the rating plate, the storage volume and gross volume must be displayed on the front of the refrigerator as per the specifications. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to each refrigerator. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, production process, and quality control and testing capabilities during a visit to its manufacturing premises.
