BIS CERTIFICATION FOR HOUSEHOLD REFRIGERATING APPLIANCE
IS 1476 (PART 1):2000

In this competitive scenario, it isn't easy to survive in the market without a standard quality and certified product. BIS license may also be required to sell products in the Indian market.

To get BIS certification and produce a standard quality product, the manufacturer must ensure that their product must follow the specified Indian standard.
Let’s take a closer look at IS 1476(Part 1):2000 for Household refrigerating appliance.

Refrigerators with or without low temperature are covered under IS 1476(Part 1):2000. This standard (Part 1) specifies the essential characteristics of fully factory assembled household refrigerators with or without crisper, ice-making, or frozen food storage compartments, as well as the test methods for determining those characteristics.

The tests described in the Indian Standard are type tests that apply to the Tropical Class (T) appliances. This standard applies to household refrigerating appliances classified as Tropical Class (T) and is intended for use in ambient temperatures from +18°C to +43°C.

Household refrigerators must be built so that they provide adequate performance and durability in use. A series of relevant tests are used to evaluate their performance in use.

Required Test

Test shall be classified in to three groups:

  1. Type tests
  2. Acceptance tests
  3. Production routine tests
  1. Type Test
The type tests must include the following:
    • Door seal test
    • Test for the mechanical strength of self and similar components
    • Door and fittings tests
    • No-load adjustment test
    • No-load performance test
    • Ice-making test
    • Thermal insulation test
    • High voltage test
    • Rated energy consumption test
    • Internal frost accumulation and defrost test
  2. Acceptance Tests
  3. Production routine test
    • Thermostat test
    • Insulation resistance test
    • Door seal test

MARKS

Each refrigerator shall have marked permanently and legibly on one or several locations with the information prescribed in the standard. The standard mark (ISI Mark) may also be applied to each refrigerator. The Manufacturer must obtain a BIS license from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use a standard mark (ISI Mark). The Bureau grants a license based on a successful assessment of manufacturing infrastructure, quality control and testing capabilities, and production process during a visit to its manufacturing premises.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ECO MARK

The refrigerator shall conform to the quality, safety, and performance requirements prescribed in this standard for ECO Mark.

When applying for an ECO Mark, the Manufacturer must provide BIS with the consent clearance required by the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974; 1977, and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981, as well as the authorization required by the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. For ECO-Mark, the refrigerator must meet the noise levels as specified in the Environment (Protection) Act of 1986 from time to time.
