BIS QCO Extension for Refrigerating Appliances
Earlier, in order to ensure standard compliance and the mandatory use of standard marks, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued the Refrigerating Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2020. It was likely to come into force from 01.01.2023.
However, after consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards, the Central Government decided that the Refrigerating Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2020, needs to be amended, and issued the Refrigerating Appliances (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2022.
As per this QCO Amendment order, the deadline to comply with Refrigerating Appliances (Quality Control) Order 2020 has been extended to Jan 1, 2024, to satisfy demands from industry stakeholders.
Quality Control Order for Refrigerating Appliances
As per Refrigerating Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2020, Household Refrigerating Appliances and Freezers shall comply with the corresponding Indian Standard and bear the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards as per Scheme I of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standard (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
BIS certification is mandatory for Freezer and Household Refrigerating Appliances. To use the standard ISI mark, all manufacturers must obtain BIS certification for freezers in accordance with IS 7872:2018 and household refrigeration appliances as per IS 17550 (Part 1):2021.

According to this QCO, the following products must meet the applicable Indian standards and bear the standard ISI mark.

Obtaining BIS certification for household refrigerators and freezers is mandatory to use the standard ISI mark. The Bureau grants a BIS license to the manufacturer for the product that complies with Indian standards. To obtain a BIS license for Household Refrigerating Appliances and Freezers, manufacturers must ensure that their products meet Indian standards. BIS Licence is granted to the manufacturer to use the standard ISI Mark on its product and sell it in the Indian market.
