Important Update: Guidelines for Implementation of IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1: 2020
In accordance with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Notification dated 27th November 2024, significant updates have been made to the standard IS 302 (Part 1): 2024, aligning it with IEC 60335-1: 2020 for "Adapters for Household and Similar Electrical Appliances." These changes are crucial for all manufacturers and stakeholders involved in the production and certification of electrical appliances. Below are the key points to ensure compliance with the updated standard:
Key Highlights of the Update:
Revised Standard: The existing IS 302-1:2008 has been revised and published as IS 302 (Part 1): 2024/IEC 60335-1: 2020. This update includes a range of changes, such as the introduction of new requirements for battery-operated appliances, updates to moisture resistance tests, clarification on power input measurement, and more. A detailed list of the changes can be found in the official notification.
Implementation Deadline:The last date for the concurrent running of both the old (IS 302-1:2008) and new (IS 302 (Part 1): 2024) standards is 23rd February 2025. After this date, the old standard will be withdrawn, and compliance to the new standard will be mandatory for all licensees.
Guidelines for Existing Licensees:
- Immediate Action Required: All existing licensees must ensure full compliance with the revised standard by the implementation deadline.
- Test Reports: Licensees must submit complete test reports from BIS-recognized laboratories for all lead models under their existing licenses, previously tested according to IS 302-1:2008.
- Undertaking: An undertaking must be provided confirming that the new requirements have been implemented across all models in the license's scope.
- Non-Compliance Consequences: Failure to comply by the deadline will result in the cancellation of the license or removal of models from the license scope.
Guidelines for New Applicants:
- Transition Period: New applications will be accepted under the old standard (IS 302-1:2008) up until one month before the last date of implementation. However, applicants must submit an undertaking to comply with the revised standard before the final deadline.
- Post-Implementation Policy: After the implementation date, no new licenses will be issued under the old standard.
Changes in Scope of License:
Urgent Action Required:
All stakeholders, including manufacturers, licensees, and applicants, are urged to take immediate action to ensure compliance with the new IS 302 (Part 1): 2024/IEC 60335-1: 2020 standard. The deadline of 23rd February 2025 is fast approaching, and failure to comply could result in disruptions to certification and licensing.
