BIS License Holders Beware of Fraudsters: Beware of fake calls or emails from people posing as BIS officials
In recent times, there has been a suspicious rise in fraudulent activities targeting BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) licensees and manufacturers. Fraudsters are attempting to dupe businesses by posing as BIS officials or representatives of testing laboratories and forcing them to pay money under false pretenses. These fraudsters claim to expedite audits or report fake sample failures and then demand money to “solve the problem”.
That is why we at Aleph India Group pay special attention to this matter and encourage all our customers to be vigilant. Throughout this blog we will explain how these scams are carried out, how to recognize a fraudulent call, and most importantly, what measures you should take to protect yourself.
How do these scams work?
Fraudsters use deceptive methods to take advantage of trusting manufacturers and BIS licensees.
Here are some possible scenarios:-
- Fake audit quickie services – Fake audit service companies impersonate BIS officials to expedite the audit process and siphon off some of the profits from fake marketing companies.
- False sample failure reports – Fake manufacturers are informed that their product samples have failed the tests and money is demanded to rectify the same.
- Threats of license suspension – Scammers may pose as BIS officials and contact you via calls or emails, providing some correct information to appear credible. They may then mislead you by falsely claiming that your BIS license is at risk of cancellation or suspension.
- Use of fake contact numbers and email IDs – These fraudsters usually use official tags like phone numbers and email addresses of established marketing names without any evidence.
What steps should you take if you receive a suspicious call?
- Do not contact – Do not give out any personal or business information to the caller.
- Verify the information – Verify any claims through your official BIS Project Coordinator or directly through the BIS portal.
- Report the incident – You should immediately report the matter to your Project Coordinator and other officials, and subsequently report the call.
- Awareness through Alertness – Make this known to your colleagues and peers in the industry so that others do not fall prey to such fraudsters.
